Welcome to Poland...

"One does not simply leave Warsaw unscarred."
- Robbie, 2012

Brucie

The trip to Warsaw was excitingly eventful, yet not. In order to help us sleep on the clunking train, we enlisted some sleeping aid. We didn't think they would work, so we joked that we'll just lie down and see what happens, and hope not to wake up by random bumps in the night. Whoa. We lay down, and woke up 5 minutes before the train station very disoriented and not remembering what happened. Good use of 10 hours. We're still trying to figure out if we actually accidentally roofied ourselves or not. Drowsiness aside, we hopped off the train to greet my cousin, Mariola, and her boyfriend, Tomek, at the Central Warsaw Train Station.

Charming...

We dropped off our luggage, took a quick walk through the city (and quickly grabbing the opportunity for a Polish doughnut, as well as getting stopped and written up by the cops for jaywalking) and took up the invitation to go out on Mariola's and Tomek's friend's boat at Serock for the afternoon, to try out a bit of wakeboarding and have a good time. I gave the wakeboarding a crack, unfortunately I didn't succeed. The fast paced day flowed into the night, with a fast dinner cooked by Mariola, and then getting dressed and off to watch the match. Then, at the pristinely early hours of the night (i.e. midnight), we headed out to a club called De Lite. A great time was had by all, particularly with Sven, which I'm sure he'll cover. I'll just skip to the part where we wake up at 2pm the next day.

NOM NOM NOM NOM
Might need a bit more practice before I get this right....serious face.

Sunday afternoon consisted of an amazing breakfast at an American themed diner, followed by sizing up some glasses for Sven, given he had lost his the night before. Cheeseburger for breakfast. Epic.

The next two days involved walking around the city (sometimes lost), visiting the Palace of Culture and Science (Stalin's gift to Poland) and visiting the enormous Copernicus' Centre of Education. The lookout from the Palace's terrace was amazing, and we also managed to wander through a Leonardo Da Vinci Exhibition, where we stared at paintings, rebuilt bridges, and pondered war machines.

The Warsaw Stadium is an icon with the Euro 2012!

Sven in front of another engineering pride of Poland - The Golden Terraces (every triangular window has unique dimensions!)
The Palace of Culture and Science!
The Centre of Education is, simply put, an enormous two story warehouse with every possible physics and human biology exhibit imaginable, from a non-Newtonian fluid simulator to a diaphragm spurting blood into the air in time with your heartbeat to a DIY igloo model.Highly recommended.

All in all, Thanks to Mariola and Tomek for playing hosts to our eventful Warsaw stay!

Robbie

Good night and day to all! Now firstly, in my preamble I would like to say that this was my first time to Poland. Also I am sure that Marek has covered all that needs to be covered but I will give you the deets on my incident...

Robbie clearly isn't happy.

After feeling drowsy and almost hungover from the sleeping tablets we'd had on the train, our first day in Poland consisted of checking out the Old Town in Warsaw, waking up with a boat ride, then going out to the night club, De Lite. Needless to say, I was not in the best shape. This turned head knockingly awesome when after a dance, a few of us decided to enter the smoking room of the club. I small, poorly vented room, it contained a lot of smoke and not much air. Suffice it to say that after talking to a girl in the room, I became lightheaded and fainted onto the hard ground below me. Moments later I was brought back to consciousness by a fellow patron and told to get up because I was bleeding. Luckily, the others saw me and helped me get cleaned up, disinfected and brought out of minor concussion. Thanks to the kindness of Mariola and Tomek they took me on several taxi rides to find a hospital to get me stitched up. We ended up crawling into bed around 6 very tired and very ready for a rest.

Now to the north of Poland! Relaxation is very much in order. Until next time, W-Town.
